We are please to announce that Zamorano will be using a new standards based report card beginning in the 2008-2009 school year. This new report card is an exciting step for our school as we work towards ensuring that all students are successful at meeting grade level standards.
Standards describe what a student should know and be able to do at each grade level in all subjects, and this new report card is designed to give you more and better information about how your child is progressing.
On the report card, you will learn whether or not your child is proficient-meaning that your child has not met grade level standards, basic-meaning that your child is approaching the standards, below basic-meaning that your child has not met the standards, or advanced-meaning that your child has exceeded the standards. The report card will also provide information on student work habits.
We think this new report card is going to be helpful in multiple ways. First, it will ensure that there is more consistency of expectations from teacher to teacher. Second, it will help teachers and students focus on the standards from the very beginning of the year, giving students a chance to get help sooner if they are not making adequate progress. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you will learn exactly how our students are doing based on the standards-you'll learn which which big ideas and concepts your children have learned and what they need to work on to ensure they are ready for the next grade level.
In September at Back to School Night, we will provide you with new information about the report card, including a sample report card, information about how to read it, and examples of what student work should look like at your child's grade level. We look forward to introducing it to you!
