We must infuse our lives with art. Our national leaders must be informed that we want them to use our taxes to support street theatre in order to oppose street gangs. We should have a well-supported regional theatre in order to oppose regionalism.

Ramona Quimby production was a hit!
Over 65 students ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade participated in
our end of year production which was well received by the audience. We
are very proud of our students and the hard work they put into this
production. It was very impressive to watch students not only act but
run the lights, sound and move sets like pros. Bravo cast and crew for
a job well done!
Entire 1st grade enjoyed Dance Experience at Casa del Prado Theatre!
It may have been raining outside, but inside the Casa del Prado Theater at Balboa Park, the sun shone on our first grade classes as they enjoyed the San Diego Civic Dance presentation of “Road Trip 2009.”
This field trip, which highlighted student performers from across the city, was sponsored by a grant from Target Stores. Target paid for 100 student tickets and bus transportation, which totaled over $800. To qualify for the grant, the field trip had to correlate to curriculum standards and benefit classroom instruction.
As a Performing Arts magnet, Valencia Park students participate in yearlong programs of Dance and Theater. This field trip supported the district’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) standards, which form the basis for Valencia Park’s performing arts instruction. It also helped to reinforce basic concepts taught in Dance Lab, an appreciation for different dance forms, such as ballet, tap, hip-hop, and folk/traditional, as well as give students the firsthand experience of dance’s ability to communicate an idea, story, or mood to the audience.
“Road Trip 2009” featured participants from Valencia Park School. Four of the dances in the show were choreographed by VP staff member Kathy Landry, and fifth grader Morgen Keim-Lopez performed in several of them. To get the first graders primed and ready for what they would see on the field trip, Ms. Landry and Morgen held a “pre-field trip” assembly the day before. They explained and demonstrated the show’s concept and even invited the students to learn a few of the dance steps. One first grade teacher commented, “The pre-assembly was great. Students knew exactly what to expect. As soon as they walked into the theater and saw the road signs and other highway decorations they were making connections to what they had learned and what they were about to experience.”
High School Musical goes to the Sports Arena!

Valencia Park Students have been busy tripping the light fantastic.
Through our partners in education, HMC, we were invited to perform
musical selections form our July production of High School Musical for
Disney's High School Musical On Ice. Our students opened the preshow on
January 28, opening night. They were spectacular. The performance was
every bit as good at the ice skaters. Valencia Park performers got to
see the show for free with their families and received cool HSM stuff.
We even had a picture of the performance featured on the first page of
the school district's web site for a whole week! Once again Valencia
Park students show off their terrific talent. |
S.R.O. at Seussical Jr.!
 |
The school production of Seussical was a huge hit. All three
performances played to full houses. The k-5 students who were in the
show and on crew gave a top-notch, professional performance. The deputy
superintendent was so impressed he even offered to help us upgrade some
equipment. Be sure to check out pictures form the show around the
campus and on our web site. Mr. Garcia and the parent volunteers out
did themselves with the colorful set and costumes. We even had a glow
in the dark scene with black lights from our partners in education, The
OLd Globe Theatre. The special effect was met with lots of applause.
Parents Debbie Payne, Laura Bojinoff and alumni parents Rene Wilson and
Rose Wilson created the most amazing costumes. These parents put in
countless hours making the kids look great. Parents Araceli Guatouna
and Marjorie Keim-Lopez painted a Dr. Seuss wonderland and glowing
fish. Mr. Joiner and Mrs. Simmon's son helped Mr. Garcia build this
set. A big thank you to ALL the parents who helped with so many things
for this show. It truly was a school community production.
