Arrival
Staff supervision of students begins at 7:30 a.m. For safety reasons, no students are to arrive at school before 7:30 a.m. except for those children who have breakfast in the cafeteria beginning at 7:20 a.m.
Student Drop Off Zone
Venice Street:
There is limited sidewalk access and parking in this busy traffic area. Please remember to go the speed limit and take alternate routes to Venice Street to cut down on traffic congestion. Utilize Pescadero, Bermuda, Santa Barbara and Point Loma Avenues for easy access to the Safety Zone on Venice Street. VERY IMPORTANT! It is prohibited at all times to drop off or park directly across the Safety Zone on Venice Street.
Catalina Blvd:
Traffic on Catalina Boulevard is very busy any many people do not pay attention to the children crossing the streets at any of the intersections around Catalina Boulevard and Silver Gate Elementary. Please be very cautious when dropping or picking up your children at school. Never drop off on the opposite side of off the school entrance and always drop off at the Safety Zone by the walk way.
Safety Zone Courtesy:
- In the morning hours, please be patient as everyone is rushed to get to their destination.
- Be patient while children are getting out of their vehicle to get onto the campus.
- Please only drop off children at the Safety Zone Curbside only; this will alleviate multiple lane in the Safety Zone
- Please refrain from making a U-turn at the Pescadero Avenue & Venice Street intersection this will decrease the danger to pedestrians trying to cross the street to get to school.
Walking
Sidewalk access is limited on some streets in the school traffic area. If you walk to school, please stay on the sidewalk and use crosswalks at all times. Do not walk in between cars. At the Venice Street entrance, stay on the sidewalk which is on the East side. Always use the crosswalks however, be very aware of traffic on Catalina Boulevard as many people do no slow down for students using the crosswalks.
Bicycles
The San Diego Police Department requests that only students in grades four and above ride bicycles to school. Although the school has a designated area by the lunch court for students to park bicycles, the San Diego Unified School District is not responsible for theft, damage, or loss of use to any bicycle, equipment or article left in or around this area. All such risk is assumed by the student.
All bicycles should have locks and licenses. Students are urged to secure their bicycles in an appropriate manner by using a quality lock and chain or other devices.
Helmets are required by California law. Students not wearing helmets may lose the privilege of parking a bike on school grounds. As defined in Vehicle Code Section 21212, any person under 18 years of age must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or when wearing in-line or roller skates. Helmets must also meet the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Dismissal
Students are dismissed promptly at 1:55 p.m. (12:25 p.m. on Thursdays). Students who ride the bus to and from school will leave shortly after dismissal.
Student Pick Up
Please meet your child at a designated spot. The front curb is painted white for 3 minute stopping. Signs are posted to assist you. Cars are not to enter the parking lot at any time between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please ensure the safety of all students by not parking in the bus loading area and asking your child(ren) to cross the street only where a crosswalk is present. The school's main concern is for the health and safety of your children.
If you are more than 10 minutes late to pick up a student, please go to the front office. You may be asked to provide identification. Please review the Visitors Policy page for additional information.
