School and district policies require homework and outside reading on a regular basis. Each teacher has a classroom homework policy that meets these requirements. During the first few weeks of school, your child will bring home a copy of the policy.
Homework Policy: It is our belief that well-planned, purposeful homework exercises should begin in elementary school, and that emphasis should be gradually increased in terms of quality and frequency as the student moves through the school system. Students should be exposed to the homework concept as early as kindergarten by receiving a very short assignment to be completed at home. First through fifth graders should become accustomed to doing increased amounts of homework daily.
Homework is designed to help students with a wide range of subjects and to develop many different skills. Homework assignments take on many different forms.
Continuation: Working on assignments begun in the class
Reading: Using textbooks, library materials, supplementary readers, and reference works
Experimentation: Working to uncover further findings on an experiment initiated in the classroom
Research: Working on long-term projects
Drills: Practicing the fundamental skills of any subject
Exhibits: Collecting and preparing materials for others to view and examine
Make-Up: Completing essential or appropriate work missed due to absence
Unfinished School Work: Students are accountable for their work in school. Those who do not complete their regular school work or homework or those who may need additional assistance will be required to remain after school. Students will be asked to call home to notify their parents of the need to remain after school. Provision will be made for those students who ride the bus.
