Kate Sessions Elementary Discipline Plan
SCHOOL STANDARDS AND PLAN FOR POSITIVE BEHAVIOR
At Sessions we are committed to providing quality education in a joyful and safe learning environment. All students have dignity and worth. All students can learn appropriate, respectful, and responsible behavior. We believe that achieving self-discipline and self-direction is a learning process which results in responsible citizenship and the development of the necessary skills for success in life. Our students understand standards and expectations, and are expected to make appropriate choices and learn to accept the consequences of their decisions.
Just as important is recognition of these individuals who demonstrate appropriate, respectful, and responsible behavior. Our goal is to create a high level of student morale. We feel the responsibility for and the recognition of student behavior is shared by all - the student, the parents, and the staff.

The student is responsible for:
1. Respecting the authority of teachers, principals, and other school staff to enforce district policy and school rules and regulations regarding student discipline and moral conduct.
2. Behaving in classroom and on school campuses in a manner that does not disrupt or interfere with the rights of other students and staff.
3. Abiding by the standards of conduct and rules and regulations governing discipline established by the school.
4. Attending assigned classes daily on time and for each full term.
The classroom teacher:
will maintain a discipline record for each child as necessary. The record will contain all discipline referrals, the date they were issued, and the consequences.
1. When a problem occurs in the classroom, the teacher will use various techniques and strategies to resolve the problem.
2. If the problem continues, the teacher will contact the parent/guardian to alert them and offer suggestions and procedures to resolve the problem.
3. If the problem persists, the student is referred to the principal with a completed “Discipline Referral Form.”
4. The teacher may detain students for disciplinary or other reasons after school for periods up to one hour. Parents will be notified by the teacher in advance. Bus students need prior arrangements.
5. Report cards will reflect inappropriate behavior/citizenship.
The parent is responsible for:
1. Accepting and respecting the right of the Board of Education to require discipline standards of behavior for all students and for all non-students while on campus during school activities.
2. Reviewing district policy and school discipline rules and regulations with family members to ensure all are familiar with and understand the standards of conduct expected by school authorities of school campuses.
3. Cooperating with school officials in carrying out appropriate discipline penalties when such action is necessary.
4. Seeking out when necessary, and with the advice and guidance of district personnel, appropriate community agencies for assistance in correcting misbehavior of the student.
The principal is responsible for:
1. When a student is referred to the principal, except in emergency situations, it is assumed that the parent/guardian has been previously contacted about the problem.
2. The principal will discipline the student and provide firm guidelines for future appropriate behavior.
3. An entry will be written on the referral form. This document will be returned to the teacher noting what action has been taken. A record will also be maintained in the office. This may be followed by a telephone contact, a letter, a conference and/or a “plan of action” as well as appropriate learning consequences.

KATE SESSIONS’ POLICY FOR ZERO TOLERANCE OF WEAPONS
District Policy:
The school district policy is anyone carrying a firearm will be expelled. In an effort to make your child’s school a safer environment for him/her, Kate Sessions Elementary is enforcing the policy and our own school policy.
School Policy:
It is against district and school policy for any person to carry, possess or have in their control any weapon at a school building, school function, school property, school bus or other transportation furnished by the school or school district.
What is considered a weapon?
Knives, firearms, explosive devices (including firecrackers, etc.), brass knuckles, and other dangerous objects are obvious weapons. However, any object (pen, pencil, letter opener, rope, ruler, etc.) used in a malicious or threatening manner shall also be considered a weapon, even if its normal use is not as a weapon.
Zero Tolerance for Weapons means:
Weapons or violent acts will not be tolerated at Kate Sessions. Therefore, students in violation of possessing or using any weapon/object in a malicious or threatening way will face consequences, to be determined by the school staff.
What you need to do as a family:
Please review this policy carefully with your child.
Bus Expectations
- Students must remain seated at all times (no changing seats unless the driver or teacher makes a request for a seat change) unless it is time to exit the bus
- Excessive loud noise is not acceptable
- Eating is not allowed
- Arms, hands and head are to be kept inside the bus
- Nothing is to be thrown out of the bus
- Driver’s directions must be followed
If a rule is broken:
1. The driver will write a referral for inappropriate behavior
2. A copy of each referral will be sent home to a parent for a signature (Please return signed form to the school office)
3. The bus liaison or principal will counsel the student(s) involved with each referral
4. Referrals 1 and 2 are warnings (unless they are so dangerous that they warrant an immediate response). These referrals will result in lost recess and/or lunch recess
5. The 3rd referral will result in a one-day suspension from the bus. Parents are responsible for bringing the student to and from school
6. The 4th referral will result in a two-day suspension.
Students are required to go home on their assigned bus and get off at their assigned stops. Any changes are expected to be given to the school in writing with a parent signature.
