Arrival
Staff supervision of students begins at 7:35 a.m. For safety reasons, no students are to arrive at school before 7:35 a.m. except for those children who have breakfast in the cafeteria beginning at 7:35 a.m.
No Classroom Entrance: We will be opening the gate between the administration building and our bike parking lot this year. Students and their parents will be directed to the playground for the morning walk-run program. Students who arrive by bus will enter through the gate by the cafeteria. All other students will enter school by the parking lot.
Please Respect Teacher Prep Time: We ask that parents and students respect the teacher prep time before school by going to the playground area. If you would like a conference with the teacher, please make an appointment through the main office. Teachers will be glad to meet with you at an appropriate time.
Student Drop Off
Adults delivering children to school should leave them off on Beryl Street in front of school, at the east gate, or at any other open gate.
Bicycles
The San Diego Police Department requests that only students in grades four and above ride bicycles to school. Although the school has a designated area by the lunch court for students to park bicycles, the San Diego Unified School District is not responsible for theft, damage, or loss of use to any bicycle, equipment or article left in or around this area. All such risk is assumed by the student.
All bicycles should have locks and licenses. Students are urged to secure their bicycles in an appropriate manner by using a quality lock and chain or other devices.
Helmets are required by California law. Students not wearing helmets may lose the privilege of parking a bike on school grounds. As defined in Vehicle Code Section 21212, any person under 18 years of age must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or when wearing in-line or roller skates. Helmets must also meet the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Leaving the School Grounds
No child is to leave the school grounds after he/she has arrived in the morning without special permission from the office. If a child leaves for any reason, he/she must be signed out by parent/guardian in the office.
Dismissal
Students are dismissed promptly at 2:10 p.m. (12:00 p.m. on Wednesdays) and should leave campus immediately upon dismissal. Students who ride the bus to and from school will leave shortly after dismissal.
Student Pick Up
Please meet your child at a designated spot either at the front entrance or another location. The front curb is painted green to indicate 15 minute stopping and white for 3 minute stopping. Signs are posted to assist you. Cars are not to enter the parking lot at any time between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please ensure the safety of all students by not parking in the bus loading area and asking your child(ren) to cross the street only where a crossing guard is present. The school's main concern is for the health and safety of your children.
If you are more than 10 minutes late to pick up a student, please go to the front office. You may be asked to provide identification. Please review the Visitors Policy page for additional information.
Changes Coming in 2009
New Drop-off/Pick-up Area: Parents will be able to drive into the current staff parking lot, drop-off their children and then return to Beryl Street starting in the spring of 2009. There will be no off-street parking available in this zone. Parents will be requested to keep moving so that we can maximize our efficiency for dropping off and picking up our students.
Traffic and Student Safety
Your help is needed to ensure that our children get to and from school safely each day. To this end, please observe the following:
· Do not double park, park in the bus loading area, or leave cars unattended in restricted parking areas;
· Teach your children to cross at the crosswalk, even if accompanied by an adult, and always check both directions before crossing;
· Do not use the parking lot to drop off or pick up students;
· Remind your children that the San Diego Police Department requests that only students in grades 4 and 5 ride bicycles to school. See Bikes on Campus;
· Skateboards and scooters are allowed on campus ONLY if the classroom teacher has given permission for them to be stored in classroom. They must be walked or carried on campus.
School Site Security
In an effort to ensure the safety of all the children, Sessions Elementary will continue to enforce state and district security policies. All visitors must sign in at the counter in the office. No visitor will be permitted on campus during school hours without a visitor or volunteer pass. We must protect our children. Gates will be secured shortly after 7:50 a.m. and unlocked a few minutes before school dismissal. Families are asked to gather in the area by the Kate Sessions tiles if they arrive before 2:10 (12 noon on Wednesdays). Kinder families may gather in the lunch area.
