International Baccalaureate Candidate School:
We are in the process of becoming authorized as International Baccalaureate World School. Our instructional program is delivered via an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. Teachers use our California State Content Standards as the foundation of our curriculum. However, we extend and enrich student learning opportunities by incorporating a global perspective along with a real world application of concepts and skills.

Program of Inquiry by grade level
Special Programs Offered:
Spanish language instruction is offered one day per week for thirty minutes. The focus of the instruction is vocabulary building and oral language skills. In the earlier grade levels students learn key words and phrases for functional Spanish language. The upper grades focus on conversational Spanish and begin the pre-reading and writing skills.
Vocal Music class is offered thirty minutes one day per week. Students attend the vocal music class where they learn skills related to singing and musical performance. In addition, the music teacher extends the learning by incorporating instruments (xylophone, recorder, drums, etc.) Students participate in a grade level performance at least once each school year.
Art class is offered one morning per week. It is a 60 minute class period. The instructional program is based upon state content standards for Visual Arts. In addition, the art teacher does include a variety of cultural awareness projects into her academic program. The students utilize a various mediums to develop their artistic skills.
Physical Education is offered by a specially credentialed teacher one day per week. The class period is one hour. The program skills are based upon the state content standards for each grade level. The goal of our physical education program is to build a positive self image and to build skills toward life-long fitness in respectful environment. To ensure the safety of our students, on P. E. days we require that children wear clothing appropriate for movement activities. In addition, students must wear tennis shoes so that they can be active on the field. Our P.E. motto is that “We win with grace and we lose with grace.”
Assessments:
Each year students in grades 2-5 are tested using the California Standards Test (CST). This is a standardized test that is administered in the spring of each school year. The assessment includes reading comprehension, written language conventions and mathematics. In fifth grade, students are also assessed in science.
Other district assessments include Literacy and Mathematics Benchmark Assessments. These tests are administered three times each year just prior to the reporting period end. Teachers use the data from these assessments to inform their instruction on a daily basis. In addition, teacher give the Developmental Reading Assessment (primary grades) or the Analytical Reading Inventory (upper grades) three times per year to measure student progress in reading behaviors.
This year we participated in the Standards-based Report Card program. The new report card gives parents a clear understanding of how their child is progressing towards meeting grade level standards. Each teacher keeps a portfolio of student work that reflects the child’s academic development during the year. Specific information on next steps is identified as a strategy for assisting the student and his/her family in achieving grade level expectations. Many of the student projects under the International Baccalaureate units are trans-disciplinary in nature and are used to demonstrate student understanding of the grade level content and skills identified for each grade.
School and district policies require homework and outside reading on a regular basis. Each teacher has a homework policy for his/her classroom that meets these requirements. Your child will bring home a copy of the policy for his or her classroom during the first few weeks of school.
