Is Muir for your child?
If your child does best with lots of attention and fewer distractions, John Muir School is for you! We offer a small, safe environment for students from kindergarten through high school. Our enrollment never exceeds 440 (K-12) students. Class sizes are limited, so that each child receives individual attention. Education is family-style, allowing students to learn from passionate and involved teachers and to teach each other through cross-age tutoring and buddy classes.
Muir is a magnet school, focusing on helping students become global citizens by involving them with other schools, teachers, students and projects around the world. Our students learn to appreciate the many cultures of the world and to respect the environment around us.
The John Muir Difference
In addition to the services that would be found at most schools:
- All Muir students learn AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) techniques. AVID is a nationally recognized program teaching organization, questioning, and learning skills so that students are prepared for post-secondary education.
- At the elementary level, Muir students benefit from small classes, a full time librarian, inquiry based science, three years of music education, physical education instruction, and a separate lunch and play area.
- Secondary students gain prestige and self-confidence from being role models and "teacher-tutors" for elementary students.
- At the middle level, in addition to our rigorous standards driven curriculum, students have additional counseling support.
- Advanced students can take higher-level courses that would not necessarily be available on traditional middle school campuses.
- At the high school level, both French and Spanish are offered.
- A "four by four" schedule allows students to focus on fewer classes at a time, but accumulate additional credits.
- Students have access to college level courses at Mesa College, Advanced Placement courses, and University of California College Prep (UCCP) online courses.
- All Muir students who live more than 2.5 miles from school have free bus transportation available.
