Dear Point Loma Community,
As I look at our beginnings of this school year, I’m very excited about the workthat we’ve started. We have laid the groundwork to ensure Cabrillo Elementary continues to be a school that meets the needs of our vibrant Point Loma community. I believe Cabrillo is an ideal school that parents want their children to attend. Our mission is for staff, parents, community, educational partners, and students to work together to create and foster a positive and challenging educational program that is a model for others to follow. Our teachers take pride in delivering rigorous, comprehensive Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
Our new K-2 GATE Nurturing component augments our already existing 3rd through 4th grade GATE Program. Students in our program participate in unique and differentiated instructional opportunities that foster high potential. A framework of five key components has been designed to support this program. These components include student identification, staff professional development, looking at social and emotional needs, parent involvement, and program assessment. Each teacher in the program is GATE certified and uses a variety of GATE approaches and strategies. In addition to the rigors required to meet district and state standards, the GATE Nurturing program offers differentiated instruction such as Multiple Intelligence, Tiered Lessons, Curriculum Compacting, Icons for Depth and Complexity, and Frames to support abstract thinking. Research for best practices for young high ability learners is incorporated in the core curriculum.
All children enrolled at Cabrillo benefit from the K-2 GATE Nurturing Program because of the differentiated strategies being implemented. In addition to academic goals, it is vital that students have access to enrichment and support programs. We are engaging in enrichment opportunities for our students in the area of Arts, Theater, Music and PE. We currently have an active PTA and are reestablishing the School Foundation. Our Navy partners have also given their full support and blessing toward the accomplishment of these goals. As we continue to support students, we are very excited to announce that Cabrillo Elementary is launching the After School English Development Program for English Language Learners. The purpose of this effort is to support our students in accelerating their Oral English Language skills. The goal is to ensure that every student is able to function in English at his/her proficiency level and gains meaningful access to grade level academic content. The program begins in November and extends until Spring.
In closing, let me reiterate that Cabrillo Elementary is committed to developing highly literate students who are motivated to be lifelong learners, problem solvers, and productive citizens in the community. With the support of Cabrillo families, teachers, and staff, we are seeing our goals realized!

Cabrillo Elementary has launched its K-2 GATE Nurturing Program to accompany the existing 3-4 Gifted and Talented Program. All five of the K-2 classrooms are participating with each teacher currently GATE certificated or in the process of attaining the certificate. The program parallels the SDUSD’s existing program that begins in 3rd Grade and continues until 12th Grade graduation. We will notify and encourage parents to attend the free Distinguished Lectures offered by the GATE office to parents of high ability learners. These lectures are in English with Spanish translation available. They are traditionally located at Brucker Education Center from 7-8:30 PM. We encourage parents to volunteer to attend monthly DAC meetings where news concerning the gifted education is presented. | Approved | | | 3/4/2009 |
PrimeTime offers before and after school care to children enrolled at Cabrillo Elementary at no cost to the parent. Primetime provides academic and enriching activities in an emotionally and physically safe environment. Staff members, from YMCA, work closely with parents, teachers, and school personnel to ensure that children receive high quality care that is structured and child centered. | Approved | | | 3/4/2009 |
Cabrillo’s Physical Education Department takes pride in providing a well-rounded weekly PE program filled with effective, challenging, and enjoyable activities that improve children’s fitness and health. Each student participates in fitness activities that help them develop strong bones and muscles. Cardio exercise is included in every lesson. We strive to keep the students engaged in continuous movement for a good 15-20 minutes throughout their lesson. All students have the opportunity to develop their sports and activity skills. The school facility has grass fields, tennis courts, and playground areas including basketball courts, wall ball courts, and fitness structures to promote upper body strength. | Approved | | | 3/4/2009 |
VAPA plays a very important part in developing the whole child. This is why we put a strong emphasis on the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA). Starting in Kindergarten, students are engaged in music, art theatre, and dance. Students in 2nd and 3rd Grade participate in a reader’s theatre study with a consultant from the Old Globe.
Students in 4th Grade are involved, weekly, in choral and instrumental music with music teachers from the district VAPA Program. With these opportunities, the teachers, also, hold their own classroom programs, present dramas, create exciting art projects, and attend plays and symphony concerts at various sites. The staff members at Cabrillo are committed to strengthening the curriculum by incorporating and creating valuable learning through the Visual and Performing Arts. | Approved |
