Many parents and community members of Alice Birney Academy of International Studies, including local college students, volunteer as tutors. School Name receives help from tutors and student teachers from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), University of San Diego (USD), Mesa College, and Madison High School. Students receive additional help each week from Everyone a Reader and Reading is Fundamental tutors.

Developed by the San Diego County Office of Education, this program assists children experiencing difficulty in learning to read. Volunteers receive three hours of training in Reading Recovery strategies and are asked to volunteer one day a week for one hour. Each tutor is matched with four students reading below grade level.
