There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.

Balboa Elementary has a Crisis Response Box that includes a comprehensive school safety plan. Required by the state, the plan includes policies and procedures for responding to:
- Disasters such as fire, earthquake, or situations requiring a lock down.
- Serious disciplinary problems
- Child abuse
- Sexual harassment
Practice drills are periodically held to ensure that students will be safe in the event of a disaster.
Adult supervision is provided in classrooms and in outside areas before and after school, during recess and lunch, and during passing time between classes. Under the direction of the principal or site administrator, specific school building security procedures are implemented by staff. In addition, district offices support schools by reviewing and disseminating safety requirements and information, coordinating safety-related services, and providing training and assistance.
All visitors must report to the main office and secure a pass, which is to be worn while on campus. To pick up a child from school, an individual must be an adult listed on the student's enrollment card and able to prove his/her identity with a picture ID.
SCHOOL POLICE VOLUNTEER PATROL (SPVP)
San Diego Unified School District Police Department Crime Prevention Unit
School crime has an effect on all levels. Children are no longer feeling safe; destroyed or damaged school property due to vandalism are an eye sore, and community frustration is escalating. Our ultimate goal is to reduce or eliminate problems around the school to ensure a safer learning environment for our children.
The SPVP is an alternate method of dealing with and responding to crime on or around school property. The SPVP consists of parents, guardians, and community members who provide Balboa Elementary School with an extra set of eyes and ears to safeguard our children and district property.
As citizens of the community, SPVP members are present during the arrival and dismissal of Balboa students everyday to provide visibility and an assurance of trust to both students and families of Balboa. SPVP report to CSO Castaneda and are an effective asset in reporting suspicious or unlawful behavior. Our preventative efforts are demonstrated as they maintain an extra and careful eye to selected school entrances & exits so that our students know that safety is paramount and Balboa is on top of it!
