Dear Alcott Phenomenal Parents,
Friday night at Alcott Elementary and Infant Toddler Development Program was astounding. All of the classrooms reported eighty to ninety percent parent participation for the school’s spring open house. There was a long line of Alcott families purchasing the incredible food provided by Skybox Restaurant in Clairemont Square organized by the PTA’s infamous Candy Flynn; and the astonishing participation of Alcott families in the PTA’s silent auction is extremely appreciated. Alcott expresses their positive reception and gratitude to each of you that made June 5, 2009 an awesomely successful event for the Alcott Community. Sincere thanks to Kim Bautista and her team of workers for the amazing job they did on Friday night.
If you haven’t applied for Primetime’s Summer Vacation Program, there is still time for you to apply for your children. Alcott is fortunate to have the program at the school. There are applications in the school’s temporary office in room 10. Please talk to Ms. Nora or Mrs. James for more information.
Alcott will have the summer reading club again this summer. On Tuesdays of each week throughout the summer the reading club will allow Alcott students to select books at their reading level to borrow for whatever time it takes your children to read them. Alcott already has a parent that will help facilitate the program. Ms. Knox has concurred to be the School’s certificated representative to provide enriching activities for your youngsters throughout the summer. Primetime’s staff will also be available to help Ms. Knox with literacy activities.
There will be an old shoe collection at Alcott for one of the Girl Scout troops that meets at the school. The Girl Scout troop is recycling old athletic shoes through the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program. Nike grinds up the old shoes and makes them into playground material. The collection bin is in the lunch court near the auditorium. Please consider donating any old shoes to this endeavor.
The yearbooks have arrived. They are awesome. Please consider purchasing a yearbook for your child. It is a super way for them to remember the past school year. The yearbooks are in full color and cost $15.00 each.
On Friday June 5, Alcott celebrated 25 students with perfect attendance for the whole year, and 13 students who had slips in the Treasure Chest for either good grades or being caught good. The students with perfect attendance are Erik Blue, Elise Boisvert, Simon Castro, Michael DeHut, Zarinna Duim, Erin Flynn, Katie Flynn, Jake Hughes, Chelsea Kuntz, Zachary Kuntz, Elijah Leeper, Jocelyn Licona, Roisin Mackenzie, Liam Maxwell, Lisa Morton, Argenis Myers Anguiano, Alvin Nguyen, Ria Pederson, Derek Peralta, Jasmine Perez, Kevin Rice, Angel Salceda, Pedro Salceda Jr., Celesta Sousa, and Shelby Ward. Those celebrated from the Treasure Box were Johann Chavez, Cali Crockett, Jayden Dimock, Ronnie Farmer, Ana Herrera, Cooper Lynch, Anthony Parker, Clarissa Pena, Christopher Roberts, Spencer Ronk, Angel Salceda, Gayle Samonte, and Kennedy Scoggins.
Just a reminder, that there is a half day of school on Monday, June 15. It is important for your child to attend school every day. Report cards and diplomas will be distributed that day.

Estimados Padres Fenomenales de Alcott,
La noche del viernes pasado en la Escuela Primaria Alcott era increíble. Todos los salones me informaron que ochenta/noventa por ciento en la participación de los padres en la exhibición de salones de primavera de la escuela. Había una línea larga de las familias de Alcott que compraban el alimento increíble proporcionado por el Restaurante de Skybox de Clairemont organizado por Candy Flynn de la PTA; y la participación asombrosa de las familias de Alcott en la subasta silenciosa de la PTA era buenísima. Dear Alcott Incredible Parents,
I thank Alcott’s PTA, parents and Jim Oyos for the awesome field day Alcott children enjoyed last Wednesday. It ran very smoothly. Alcott is very lucky to have Jim Oyos and his team as a part of the school’s before and after school program.
Alcott will have the summer reading club again this summer. I will let you know the day and time in my letter next week. One day of each week throughout the summer the reading club will allow Alcott students to select books at their reading level to borrow for whatever time it takes your children to read them. Alcott already has a parent that will help facilitate the program. Hopefully, there will be a certificated teacher to enrich the summer reading club.
Alcott will have summer school for students with special needs from June 22 – July 17, 2009 from 8:20 AM to 12:35 PM. The parents of the students who will be attending summer school at Alcott have been notified. The School District is offering summer school to first, third and fifth grade students who have academic challenges at the school closest to their residence from July 27 to August 21, 2009. Alcott resident students who are being offered summer school can attend Field Elementary.
There will be a slight time change for the beginning and the end of school at Alcott. Please read the attached letter to be informed of the changes. Alcott will continue to offer before school care for families.
There will be a mini assembly this Friday, June 5, 2009, at 8:15 AM to honor Alcott students who have had perfect attendance the entire school year. I will also select twelve students for excellent grades and superior behavior from the treasure box. The perfect attendance students and the selected twelve students will enjoy a pizza party one day next week.
Please plan to attend Alcott’s spring open house and the PTA’s silent auction and dinner this Friday, June 5, 2009. Open house is from 5:30 TO 6:30 PM. The dinner and auction follow the school’s open house. I hope to see you there!

Estimados Padres Increíbles de Alcott,
Me gustaría dar las gracias a la PTA de Alcott, a los padres de Alcott y a Jim Oyos para dar a los niños de Alcott un día impresionante de jugar en el campo el miércoles pasado. Salió muy lisamente. Alcott tendrá el club de lectura en el verano otra vez este año. Les diré el día y la hora en mi carta la semana próxima. Un día de cada semana a través del verano el club de lectura permitirá a los estudiantes de Alcott que seleccionen libros de su nivel de lectura para leer en casa para cualquier tiempo que sus niños necesiten para leerlos. Alcott ya tiene a un padre que ayudará a facilitar el programa. Optimistamente, habrá una maestra para enriquecer el club de lectura.
Alcott tendrá la escuela del verano para los estudiantes con necesidades especiales de 22 de junio – el 17 de julio de 2009 de 8:20 AM a 12:35 PM. Los padres de los estudiantes que estarán asistiendo la escuela del verano en Alcott han sido notificados. El Distrito Escolar ofrecerá la escuela de verano a los estudiantes de primer, tercer y quinto grado que tienen desafíos académicos en la escuela más cercana a su residencia del 27 de julio al 21 de agosto de 2009. Dear Alcott Fantastic Parents,
I would like to express my gratitude to the military families who have children that attend Alcott. Sincere thanks to each of you for the time you give to keep our country a safe place to live.
Sincere thanks to Lori Sorbo for working with Alcott students to produce the PTA’s Variety Show last week. Twenty-eight children displayed their amazing talents to students and staff last Wednesday morning and to parents and family members last Thursday night. I haven’t quite recovered from the laughter Jacob Keltner, Liam Maxwell, and Alex Volk provided between the different performances. Also, thanks to Balletiquette for teaching Alcott’s students their awesome dancing moves.
The PTA still needs your help with donations for the Silent Auction baskets on June 5, 2009. The deadline for the donations is this Friday, May 29, 2009. If you need a reminder about what to donate, please ask your child’s teacher. The baskets will be on display all next week, June 1st to June 5th in room 18. You can stop by to see the baskets after the Sneak a Peak which is the same week.
At Sneak a Peak parents will meet with the teachers of their child’s next grade before school from 7:45 AM to 8:15 AM in one of the grade’s classrooms. It will occur the week of June 1 – June 5, 2009. First grade will be Monday, June 1, 2009, second grade will be Tuesday, June 2, 2009, third grade will be Wednesday, June 3, 2009, fourth grade will be Thursday, June 4, 2009, and fifth grade will be Friday, June 5, 2009. I hope to see you there!
Yearbooks are for sale! I hope you and your children will consider purchasing one of the PTA’s yearbooks. It has many photographs of your incredible children as they went through the school year. Karen Keltner and her team of parents have done an astounding job for your children to enjoy for years to come.
Twelve students were honored on Friday, 05-22-09 for their academic and caught being good behaviors. The students venerated were Junior Salceda, Adrian Ortiz, Aaliyah Delgado, Salvador Pena, Mathew Swanson, Matthew Cadena, Ana Herrera, Preston Riley, Katie Taylor, Alex Morales, Russell Sorbo, and Victoria Streeter. The students will enjoy a pizza party on Thursday of this week to honor their efforts to make Alcott a fabulous school.
One hundred and nine second through fifth students attended school all six days of attendance during the CST and the CMA testing window. These students will be honored with an ice cream party on Friday of this week. Thanks parents for sending your students to school each and every day during STAR testing.
Please return your payment for spring portraits or return the portrait sheets that you are not purchasing to your child’s teacher by this Friday, 05-29-09. If you have any questions, please call the school office.

Estimados Padres Fantásticos de Alcott,
Yo querría expresar mi gratitud a las familias militares que tienen a niños que asisten a Alcott. Sinceras gracias a cada uno de ustedes que da a mantener nuestro país que un lugar seguro para vivir.
Sinceras gracias a Lori Sorbo para trabajar con los estudiantes de Alcott para producir el espectáculo de variedades de la PTA la semana pasada. Dear Alcott Marvelous Parents,
Sincere gratitude to all the Alcott’s Community Families who participated in the Infant Toddler Program’s fundraiser. It was a success. I congratulate Judy Norton and Rebeca Griep, infant toddler teachers, and their team of helpers for dedicating many hours to last week’s fundraiser. The Program will be able to continue maintaining the sensory room and purchase specialized equipment for the school’s infants and toddlers.
Alcott’s second, third, fourth, and fifth graders finished the state exams last week. The school provided snacks and peppermint treats to your youngsters each day of testing. The teachers have worked hard all year to teach your children their grade’s standards. They have also used the District’s literacy, math and science assessments given throughout the school year to determine if your children are learning their grade’s criteria.
Thanks to all the parents that contributed to the PTA’s recycling event last Thursday and Friday. Alcott’s PTA will change the recycle drop-off dates to every other Tuesday to coincide with the scheduled blue can collection by the city.
This Wednesday your sons and daughters will select a book from the PTA’s Reading Is Fun (RIF) initiative. In addition, your children will enjoy a fun obstacle course created by Alcott Elementary’s amazing physical education teacher, Cyndy Aiken. Any help with the RIF book distribution or the obstacle course would be appreciated on Wednesday.
There will be summer school at Alcott this year for students with IEPs only. The dates are June 22 – July 17. There will be another summer school session in August for special education and regular education students. This session will
run from July 27 – August 21.
SAY San Diego is offering a summer camp at Alcott this year from June 16 to September 2. The information and registration form is available in the front office.
It appears Ms. Reynolds class is using their cell phones at inappropriate times. The District’s policy for elementary students is they can only use cellular phones before and after school. Please refer to the District’s policy that is attached to this letter.
This week and last week the United States is celebrating teachers across the country. Alcott’s PTA has planned an activity each day this week to celebrate the school’s astounding teachers. I cannot express how fortunate I am to be able to work with such amazing elementary and infant toddler teachers.

Estimados Padres Maravilloso de Alcott,
La gratitud sincera a las familias de la Comunidad de Alcott que tomaron parte en el recogedor de fondos de Programa Infantil. Tuvo un gran éxito. Les Felicito a Judy Norton y Rebeca Griep, maestras del Programa Infantil, y su equipo de ayudantes por dedicar tantas horas al recogedor de fondos la semana pasada. El Programa podrá continuar mantener el salón de sensorios y comprar equipo especializado para los niños del Programa Infantil.
Los alumnos de segundo, tercer, cuarto y quinto grado terminaron los exámenes de estado la semana pasada. La escuela proporcionó bocados y dulces de menta a sus jóvenes cada día de los exámenes. Los maestros han trabajado duramente todo año para enseñar a sus niños los criterios de su grado. Ellos también han utilizado las evaluaciones del Distrito de lectoescritura, de matemáticas y de ciencia dadas a través del año escolar para determinar si sus niños aprendían los criterios de su grado.
Gracias a todos los padres que contribuyeron al acontecimiento del reciclaje de la PTA el jueves y el viernes pasado. La PTA de Alcott cambiará las fechas de reciclaje de a cada dos martes para coincidir con la colección azul por la ciudad.
Este miércoles sus hijos y las hijas seleccionarán un libro de la Lectura es divertida (RIF) de la iniciativa de la PTA. Además, sus niños disfrutarán de una pista de obstáculos divertida creada por la maestra de la educación física, Cyndy Aiken. Cualquier ayuda con la distribución de libros de RIF o el obstáculo sería apreciada el miércoles.

Dear Alcott Outstanding Parents,
Alcott’s Community Garden was visited by numerous individuals this past Saturday. Sincere thanks to Lori Sorbo for selecting Alcott to be on the Clairemont Town Council’s Garden Tour. Special appreciation goes to Emily Dolton, Francine Otterson & her mom, Lanie and Mike Ashworth and Julie James for being Alcott docents for the day long event at the school. Many parents also donated plants for the garden boxes and barrels. Your donations, time and dedication are immensely appreciated. I also have to thank Alcott’s teachers, especially Laurie Carano and Stephanie Brown for their beyond the classroom assistance to make Alcott’s Community Garden a success.
The PTA is having a recycling activity this Thursday and Friday. You can bring plastic bottles and aluminum cans at the school’s meet and greet program in the parking lot or to the kindergarten playground. This small fundraiser will help pay for fieldtrips, parent-student activities and other PTA sponsored items. On another PTA note, thanks to Donna Volk, her team of parents and YOU for a successful cookie dough event.
This Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday the Alcott’s Infant Toddler Program presents its mother’s day gift sale and silent auction in room 10. In addition, nachos will be sold after school on Wednesday at 12: 35 PM.
Congratulations to the parents of the fourth students that have been selected to be a part of the school’s safety patrol. Mrs. James and Officer Filley have been busy training them. Also, sincere appreciation to the parents of this year’s fifth grade safety patrol students. Your children have done a phenomenal job crossing students and parents on Hidalgo Avenue.
Alcott’s second third, fourth, and fifth grade students will finish testing this week. Please refer to last week’s STAR letter for testing tips for parents. Last week almost the entire school did Cardio Club on the three testing mornings. Students that completed three laps were given a bottle of water for their efforts. Please join your children if possible.
Have your children started using the Skatekids Online program at home? I wrote to you about it in last week’s letter. The program is very popular at school. Students are using it before & after school and during the school day. If you have any questions or didn’t get your child’s password from his/her teacher, please email me or call the school.

Estimados Padres Sobresalientes de Alcott,
El Jardín de la Comunidad de Alcott fue frecuentado por numerosos individuos el sábado pasado. Sinceras gracias a Lori Sorbo para seleccionar Alcott para estar en la Visita del Jardín del Concilio del Pueblo de Clairemont. La apreciación especial va a Emily Dolton, Francine Otterson & su mamá, Lanie y Mike Ashworth y a Julie James para ser representantes de Alcott para el día largo del acontecimiento en la escuela. Muchos padres también donaron plantas para las cajas de jardín y los barriles. Sus donativos, su tiempo y su dedicación son apreciados inmensamente. Yo también tengo que dar gracias a los maestros de Alcott, especialmente Laurie Carano y Stephanie Brown por su más de allá de ayudar fuera del salón para hacer el jardín de la comunidad de Alcott un éxito.

Este miércoles, jueves, y viernes el Programa Infantil presenta una venta de regalo del día de la madre y una subasta silenciosa en el salón 10. Además, los nachos serán vendidos después de escuela el miércoles en 12:35 PM.
Las felicitaciones a los padres de los estudiantes de cuarto grado que han sido seleccionados para ser una parte de la patrulla de la seguridad de la escuela. La Sra. James y el Policía Filley han estado ocupado enseñándolos. También, apreciación sincera a los padres de los estudiantes de quinto grado de la patrulla de seguridad este año. Sus niños han hecho un trabajo fenomenal de cruzar estudiantes y padres en la Avenida Hidalgo.
Los estudiantes de segundo, tercer, cuarto y quinto grado de Alcott terminarán exámenes esta semana. Refiéranse por favor a la carta de STAR de la semana pasada para las puntas para padres. La semana pasada casi la escuela entera hizo el Club de Cardio en las tres mañanas de exámenes. Los estudiantes que completaron tres carreras fueron dados una botella de agua para sus esfuerzos. Una por favor a sus niños si es posible.
¿Han comenzado sus niños utilizar el programa de Skatekids en el internet? Escribí a ustedes acerca de él en la carta de la última semana. El programa es muy popular en la escuela. Los estudiantes lo utilizan antes & después de escuela y durante el día lectivo. Si usted tiene cualquier pregunta o consiguieron la contraseña de su niño de su maestro(a), por favor mándenme un correo electrónico o llamen a la escuela.
